The protective structure over the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was left without power after Russia struck the Slavutych substation. It is currently powered by two emergency diesel generators.

This was reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

As of Thursday, October 2, two emergency diesel generators are providing power to the confinement structure over the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The power outage occurred after Russia shelled the Slavutych substation on October 1.

“The facility quickly switched to alternative lines, and power was restored, except for the New Safe Confinement (NSC), which covers the old sarcophagus built after the accident at the Chernobyl NPP in 1986,” the IAEA said in a statement.

According to the IAEA, other facilities at the Chernobyl NPP are fully supplied with electricity and are operating from conventional power sources.

As a reminder, on October 1, the Chernobyl NPP was blacked out due to a Russian strike on the energy infrastructure of the city of Slavutych, which supplies the station.
