The Cabinet of Ministers has adopted a series of decisions to improve the electricity supply situation. The plans include cutting off power to enterprises that are not critical. The power cuts will not affect hospitals, schools, and a number of other facilities.

This was announced by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.

Regional military administrations have been instructed to review the lists of critical infrastructure facilities within two days. The power cuts will not affect hospitals, schools, life support facilities, and defense and industrial complex enterprises. The power supply to these facilities will remain uninterrupted.

“Consumers who are not critical to the functioning of the regions in today’s energy supply conditions should be excluded from the lists. We are making this decision to support the people. The freed-up electricity will be directed to domestic consumers,” Svyrydenko explained.

Regional administrations, local authorities, and municipal enterprises have also been instructed to reduce electricity consumption—additional lighting of buildings and streets, parks, decorative garlands, and street advertising in city centers are not a priority.

“Streets and highways with high accident rates must remain lit even in conditions of electricity conservation. Their list should be determined by the Ministry of Internal Affairs together with the National Police,” the statement said.

The Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Development, the State Energy Supervision Inspectorate, and all regional state administrations must ensure the full functioning of distributed generation facilities – gas piston and gas turbine installations, including cogeneration, diesel, gasoline, and gas generators. All available cogeneration plants must be put into operation.

The government has also allowed the import of electricity by state-owned companies and companies with 50% or more state ownership.

“This will reduce the load on Ukraine’s power system and stabilize the load during peak hours. Imports will take place in agreement with Ukrenergo,” Svyrydenko said.
