The United States will allocate $100 million to repair the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant’s containment structure, which was damaged by a Russian drone. The total funding requirement for the restoration is estimated at approximately €500 million.

This was announced by Ukraine’s Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal.

“The U.S. will allocate $100 million to repair the Chernobyl NPP containment structure, which was damaged by a Russian drone,” Shmyhal wrote.

The financial needs for restoring the containment structure were discussed during the International Chernobyl Conference. Currently, the total amount of necessary funding is approximately 500 million euros.

Shmyhal thanked the U.S. State Department, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, the American delegation working in Kyiv, and the U.S. administration for their contribution to strengthening radiation safety in Europe.

As a reminder, on the night of February 14, 2025, a Russian strike drone carrying a high-explosive warhead struck the shelter covering the destroyed fourth power unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which prevents the spread of radiation. The facility sustained significant damage as a result of the strike, and the fire was extinguished. No increase in background radiation was recorded.
