Ukrainian Foreign Ministry speaker Georgy Tykhiy assured that Ukraine does not develop and does not plan to create nuclear weapons.
“Ukraine adheres to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), does not possess, does not develop and does not intend to create nuclear weapons. We actively cooperate with the IAEA and are fully transparent for its monitoring, which makes it impossible to use nuclear materials for military purposes,” Tykhiy emphasized.
The statement was a response to a publication in The Times, which said that Ukraine is allegedly capable of building a nuclear bomb within months if US President-elect Donald Trump cuts off military aid.
The publication referred to an “analytical note for the Ukrainian Defense Ministry” that indicated that Ukraine could use plutonium from spent fuel rods of nine nuclear reactors.
Ukraine is committed to the NPT; we do not possess, develop, or intend to acquire nuclear weapons. Ukraine works closely with the IAEA and is fully transparent to its monitoring, which rules out the use of nuclear materials for military purposes. https://t.co/k5GhqyLtir
