Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Évian during President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit.

According to Sybiha, the two officials exchanged views ahead of the anticipated contacts between the leaders of Ukraine and the United States.

Sybiha congratulated Rubio on the agreement reached between the United States and Iran and expressed hope that it would contribute to security in the Middle East and stability in global energy markets.

At the same time, the Ukrainian foreign minister stressed that Kyiv sees the agreement as an opportunity to advance efforts aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.

“I reiterated President Zelensky’s expectation that this agreement creates an opportunity to reenergize US-led peace efforts aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine,” Sybiha said.

The officials discussed possible ways to advance the peace process. Sybiha shared Ukraine’s view of the steps needed to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin to meaningful negotiations.

The Ukrainian minister also informed Rubio about Russian strikes targeting the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and other civilian, cultural and historical sites.

“They demonstrate that Moscow is waging a war against faith, heritage and Ukrainian identity,” Sybiha said.

In addition, he briefed the US secretary of state on Ukraine’s recent battlefield successes and the results of long-range strikes against Russian targets.

According to Sybiha, Ukraine sees growing momentum toward achieving peace through strength and relies on strong US leadership and continued engagement in this effort.
