In Dagestan, a second wave of flooding has resulted in four deaths and widespread destruction. Over 2,000 residential buildings have been flooded, and thousands of people have been evacuated.
This is reported by Russian media.
On the night of April 4, Dagestan was hit by heavy rains, causing a new wave of flooding following the previous natural disaster on March 27. Within a few hours, 13 mm of rain fell, compared to the monthly average of 19 mm.
Torrents of water mixed with mud, rocks, and tree debris flooded the streets of Derbent and Makhachkala, turning them into rivers. Water quickly filled courtyards, building entrances, and the first floors of homes.
In Makhachkala, a three-story annex to a six-story building collapsed due to soil erosion. Rescuers evacuated 500 people, including 150 children.
In the Derbent district, the earthen embankment of the Gedzhu Reservoir dam burst. The water flooded the settlements of Mikhailovka, Duzlak, Zarechnaya, Sulepa, Urgun, and the village of Mamedkala.
A total of 4,165 people, including 823 children, were evacuated from the four settlements. Temporary shelters were set up for the victims, and some people moved in with relatives.
According to rescue workers, more than 2,000 residential buildings have been flooded in nine settlements, 1,817 private plots have been destroyed, and more than 170 sections of road have been damaged.
The disaster has already claimed the lives of four people. In the village of Kirk, a landslide destroyed residential buildings, and one person died under the rubble.
Water swept away cars on the roads; rescuers pulled seven people from flooded vehicles. Twenty sections of road remain closed in the region, and traffic is significantly hampered on five others.
