Yesterday’s massive missile strike targeted substations that feed nuclear power plants

Due to Russia’s new attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, three operating nuclear power plants – Khmelnytsky, Rivne and South Ukraine – were forced to reduce electricity production.

This is stated in a statement by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

The power at nine reactors of these plants was reduced as a precautionary measure, and one of the reactors at Rivne NPP was disconnected from the grid. At the same time, the plants continue to receive power, although Khmelnytsky NPP has lost connection with two power lines.

“Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is extremely fragile and vulnerable, which puts nuclear safety at great risk. I reiterate my call for maximum military restraint in areas where major nuclear power facilities and other facilities on which they depend are located,” Grossi said in a statement.

On the night of November 28, Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure using missiles and drones. Ukrainian air defense destroyed 76 cruise missiles, 3 guided missiles and 35 drones.
