Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that peace talks on the war in Ukraine could start this winter.
This was reported by Reuters.
Tusk emphasized that Warsaw will play a key role in the negotiations when it begins its rotating presidency of the European Union on January 1.
“I will hold a series of talks, which will primarily concern the situation on our eastern border. Our delegation will be co-responsible for the formation of the political calendar and possible negotiations that could start this winter, although this is still in question,” he said during a government meeting.
The Polish Prime Minister also announced the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Warsaw on Thursday. The talks will focus on the results of Macron’s recent meetings with US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris.
In addition, Tusk said that he is in regular contact with his counterparts from the Baltic States and Scandinavia. At the beginning of the Polish EU presidency, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to visit Warsaw.
“I want Poland not only to participate in the negotiations, but also to set the tone for important decisions that will bring security to our country and protect Polish interests,” Tusk concluded.
