Ukrainian foil fencer Olga Sopit won the first gold medal in Ukraine’s history in women’s foil at the European Fencing Championships.

The 23-year-old athlete from Kyiv achieved the historic result at the continental championships in Antony, France.
Sopit finished first in her pool after winning four of her six bouts, earning direct qualification to the Round of 32.
In the knockout stage, she defeated Austria’s Lilli Maria Brugger (14:7), Poland’s Marta Jakubowska (15:7), and then edged fellow Ukrainian Daria Myroniuk 12:11 in the quarterfinals.
She secured at least a medal by reaching the semifinals, where she beat Spain’s Maria Marino 15:8.
In the final, Sopit faced one of the most decorated fencers in the world — Italy’s Arianna Errigo, an Olympic champion, 10-time world champion and 15-time European champion.
The Ukrainian produced a dominant performance and won the gold medal with a convincing 15:8 victory.
As a result, Olga Sopit became the first Ukrainian athlete ever to win a European Championships gold medal in women’s foil. The triumph is also one of the most significant victories of her career, as it came against one of the most accomplished fencers in the history of the sport.
