U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated Ukrainians on the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Ukraine’s independence. In his message, he praised Ukrainians’ resilience, voiced support for the country’s sovereign future and called for the moment to be used to achieve lasting peace.
The text of the greeting was published by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“Dear Mr. President! On behalf of the American people, I congratulate you and the citizens of Ukraine on Independence Day. August 24 is a day when we celebrate our strong friendship, built on 35 years of diplomatic relations — a bond that has only grown stronger since Ukraine gained independence,” Trump’s letter said.
The U.S. president noted that Ukrainians had “built a great country” through courage, bravery and talent.
“As you mark this important date, know that the United States admires your resilience, honors your sacrifices and remains confident in your future as a sovereign, prosperous nation,” Trump wrote.
He also called for using the current moment to bring the war to an end.
“Let us seize this moment to end the conflict and build a strong, lasting peace that will unlock Ukraine’s enormous potential for future generations,” the message said.
Zelenskyy thanked Trump and the American people for their support.
“These words, like the sound of Patriot PAC-3 missile launches, lift our spirits and give us hope that lives can be protected from brutal Russian attacks and that a dignified peace can be achieved,” the Ukrainian president wrote.
He also thanked Trump and all Americans for their congratulations and support.
