Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina and her husband, France’s Gael Monfils, made a commanding start in the US Open 2026 mixed doubles event. The couple defeated Alexandra Eala and Felix Auger-Aliassime 4-1, 4-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.
The result was reported by Suspilne Sport.
Svitolina and Monfils lost the opening game of the first set before winning the next four in a row. The Ukrainian-French duo also dropped just one game in the second set.
In the round of 16, they defeated the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala and world No. 4 Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada. Eala and Auger-Aliassime had not previously played an official match together.
The US Open 2026 mixed doubles tournament is being held under a special format. A team must win four games to take a set, while matches are played as the best of three sets.
Organizers awarded Svitolina and Monfils a wild card into the main draw. The match marked the married couple’s first appearance together at an official professional tournament.
They previously teamed up at a celebratory mini-tournament ahead of the French Open. Svitolina and Monfils defeated Maria Sakkari and Novak Djokovic in that final.
In the quarterfinals, the Ukrainian-French pair will face the winners of the match between top seeds Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic and the team of Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten.
The US Open 2026 will be the final Grand Slam tournament of Monfils’ professional career.
