The German airline group Lufthansa is scaling back its summer flight schedule and canceling approximately 20,000 short-haul flights. The reason is the rise in aviation fuel prices following the outbreak of the conflict with Iran.

This was reported by the Lufthansa Group.

The company noted that the schedule revision will allow it to reduce the number of unprofitable flights and save over 40,000 tons of fuel. The total reduction in capacity will amount to less than 1% of available passenger-kilometers.

The first changes have already been implemented: 120 daily flights have been canceled through the end of May, and passengers have been notified. Some routes have been temporarily suspended, including flights from Frankfurt to Bydgoszcz, Rzeszów, and Stavanger.

At the same time, some routes are being rerouted through the group’s other hubs, including Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels. Lufthansa emphasizes that passengers will continue to have access to the global route network, including long-haul flights.

The company also reported that fuel supplies for the coming weeks remain stable. The updated flight schedule for the summer season is planned to be released in late April or early May.
