Germany is starting to develop a new concept of shelters to provide more protected spaces in emergency situations.

Spiegel writes about it.

“We are working on creating the key elements of the shelter concept,” said a representative of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The plan is expected to take some time to develop due to the need for large-scale coordination.

The authorities are currently analyzing which buildings can be converted into bomb shelters. The list of potential shelters includes subway stations, basements, parking lots, and private premises.

“The main thing is that these places should be quickly accessible to the public,” the spokesman said.

According to the government’s plan, citizens will be able to find the nearest shelters using mobile applications.

Currently, only 579 of the original 2,000 bomb shelters in Germany are in a state of readiness. These shelters can accommodate about 480 thousand people.

The government continues to work on expanding the network of shelters to increase the level of protection of citizens in case of emergencies.
