During a meeting in Linköping, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine expects to receive its first JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets in 2026. The statement came after talks with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, according to the Office of the President of Ukraine.

The two leaders discussed strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities, particularly the development of its air forces and the training of Ukrainian pilots to operate the Swedish aircraft. Gripen is viewed as one of the most effective elements in enhancing Ukraine’s aviation.

During the visit, Zelenskyy and Kristersson observed a short air show at Saab’s airfield in Linköping, where the Gripen jets demonstrated rapid takeoff and landing, high maneuverability, and pilot proficiency.

The leaders also focused on reinforcing Ukraine’s air defense system and the implementation of the PURL initiative, in which Sweden is one of the first contributors. The country has already provided $275 million, jointly with Norway and Denmark — totaling $500 million — and is ready to expand its participation in the program.

Another key topic was support for Ukraine’s energy sector, which continues to suffer from Russian attacks. Zelenskyy and Kristersson discussed the need for equipment for emergency and repair works, supplies for gas production facilities, and financing for gas purchases.

The Ukrainian president also briefed his counterpart on communications with the United States and other partners regarding strengthening Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities.

“The fact is that Russia responds only to strength — the strength of pressure. That’s why we brought the topic of long-range capabilities, specifically the Tomahawks, to the agenda with our partners,” Zelenskyy emphasized.

The President of Ukraine and the Prime Minister of Sweden coordinated their positions ahead of upcoming meetings in Europe — the European Council summit in Brussels and the Coalition of the Willing gathering in London.
