Apple has released iOS 16.7.15, iPadOS 16.7.15, iOS 15.8.7, and iPadOS 15.8.7 for older iPhone and iPad models because of a sophisticated Coruna exploit. The company recommends that users install the updates as soon as possible to improve device security.
As reported by MacRumors, the new software versions are designed for devices that cannot run newer versions of iOS and iPadOS. Users can install the update by opening Settings, selecting General, and choosing Software Update, while devices with automatic updates enabled will receive the software automatically in the coming days.
According to Apple, the fixes in iOS/iPadOS 15.8.7 and iOS/iPadOS 16.7.15 are related to the sophisticated Coruna exploit that was disclosed by Google last week.
Apple said that the vulnerabilities had already been addressed in earlier iOS 16 and iOS 17 updates, but the new releases bring the same security fixes to older devices that cannot update to iOS 17 or later.
The company stresses that users of older iPhones and iPads should install the updates as soon as possible because they include important security fixes. Apple has committed to providing security updates for iPhones for at least five years after launch, though the company often supports devices much longer. Earlier this year, for example, the iPhone 5s received a new software update 13 years after its original launch.
