Apple plans to release the second-generation iPhone Air in the first quarter of 2027. The new model could feature a second rear camera, a more powerful processor, and upgraded Apple-designed connectivity chips.
This was reported by MacRumors, citing GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu, who covers Apple.
According to Pu, the iPhone Air 2 will receive five major upgrades:
- a second 48-megapixel rear camera with an Ultra Wide lens to complement the main Fusion camera;
- a slightly smaller Dynamic Island;
- a faster and more power-efficient A20 Pro processor manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 2nm process;
- Apple’s second-generation N2 wireless networking chip;
- a new C2 modem for 5G connectivity.
The current iPhone Air is powered by a 3nm A19 Pro processor. Its N1 chip supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, while also improving the performance of AirDrop and Personal Hotspot. The C1X modem handles 5G connectivity and is described by Apple as the most power-efficient modem ever used in an iPhone.
Some specifications, however, are expected to remain unchanged. Pu believes the iPhone Air 2 will retain its 6.5-inch display, 12GB of RAM, and 18-megapixel Center Stage front camera.
According to preliminary information, Apple will unveil the iPhone Air 2 around March 2027 alongside the standard iPhone 18 and the more affordable iPhone 18e.
The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable smartphone reportedly known as the iPhone Ultra are expected to launch in September 2026. Apple may therefore split the release of its new iPhone lineup into two stages for the first time.
