As a result of the Russian shelling of the Odesa region on April 26, port infrastructure was damaged and a tank containing 6,000 tons of sunflower oil was destroyed. Some of the oil spilled into the port’s waters, creating a large oil slick.
This was reported by the State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District.
Following the shelling, a fire broke out at the “Chornomorsk” seaport, during which a 6,000-ton sunflower oil tank was destroyed.
Services of the Chornomorsk branch of the State Enterprise “AMPU” contained the consequences of the accident. Barriers were installed on-site to prevent the spread of the spill, and the storm sewer was shut off to prevent further leakage of product residues into the aquatic environment.
“No soil contamination has been recorded, as the area has a concrete surface. However, an oil spill into the port’s water area has been detected,” the statement reads.
A slick approximately 400 by 200 meters in size formed on the water’s surface. Boom barriers were deployed to contain it.
The inspection also collected seawater samples for laboratory testing. Once the results are received, the actual level of contamination will be determined and the resulting damage calculated.
