Fuel oil from sunken Russian tankers washed up on the shores of Odesa region

24 January 2025 11:19

Fuel oil from Russian tankers sunk in the Kerch Strait has reached the shores of Odesa region.

This was reported by Ivan Rusev, an employee of the Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park and environmentalist, on his Facebook page.

“The terrible Black Sea fuel oil disaster has reached our Odesa shores. After the storms, fuel oil, which was spilled after the accident of the Russian tankers in the Kerch Strait, washed onto the sandy embankment in the Katranka recreational area near the Danube Biosphere Reserve and the Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park. I wrote that the consequences of such environmental disasters have no limits and that the thousands of tons of fuel oil that spilled into the sea will cause great disaster for the Black Sea’s natural ecosystems and biodiversity,” the ecologist said.

On the morning of December 15, two Russian ships, Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239, began to sink near the Kerch Strait. There were 13 crew members on board one ship and 14 on board the other.

The accident led to the leakage of more than 4,000 tons of fuel oil into the sea. Greenpeace claims that this could have serious environmental consequences.
