23-year-old Italian Yannik Sinner defeated German Alexander Zverev to become the Australian Open champion for the second time in a row.
On his way to the final, Sinner lost only two sets: in the second round to Australian Tristan Skulcate and in the 1/8 finals to Dane Holger Rune.
His opponent in the final, Alexander Zverev, reached the deciding match of the Australian Open for the first time in his career. In the semifinals, the German defeated Novak Djokovic, who withdrew after losing the first set.
In the final, Yannik Sinner defeated Zverev in three sets – 6:4, 7:6, 6:3. In the first set, the eighth game was decisive, and in the second set, the tennis players reached a tiebreaker, where Sinner proved to be stronger. In the third set, the Italian broke in the sixth game and confidently finished the match.
