A powerful explosion at an ammunition factory near Granada, Spain, on October 30 injured three people. The facility is owned by defense group Czechoslovak Group and produces ammunition of various calibers and missile components for Ukraine.

The incident was reported by ABC and The Kyiv Independent.

The blast occurred at around 9 a.m. on October 30 at Fábrica de Municiones de Granada (FMG), an ammunition plant in the El Fargue district on the outskirts of Granada. According to local police, the explosion took place in a gunpowder-burning area, a restricted section of the facility where people are not normally supposed to be present.

Emergency services received numerous reports of the explosion, which was also felt in nearby towns, including Fuente Vaqueros and La Zubia.

Three people sustained minor injuries, including hearing damage. No serious injuries have been reported.

According to representatives of Spain’s UGT trade union, the explosion occurred during a routine test in a fenced-off area of the factory.

Firefighters, Spanish National Police officers and Tedax bomb disposal specialists responded to the scene. Police established two security perimeters, one of which was intended to provide assistance to those injured. The cause of the explosion remains unknown.

This was the second incident involving the facility in the past two weeks. On October 13, a company truck carrying mortar ammunition overturned on the road to El Fargue.

The factory is owned by Slovakia’s MSM Group, which is part of the defense division of Czech holding company Czechoslovak Group (CSG), one of Central Europe’s largest defense companies. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Spanish facility has been producing ammunition of various calibers and missile components for Ukraine.

According to CSG CEO Michal Strnad, the Czech group is one of the key suppliers of ammunition to Ukraine under the Czech ammunition initiative. The program was launched in early 2024 amid severe ammunition shortages in Ukraine. Since then, millions of artillery shells have been delivered to Ukrainian forces through the initiative.
