Former world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, 49, is almost 100% committed to returning to boxing for a high-profile fight in 2025, The Ring reports. The last time he entered the ring was in April 2017, when he was defeated in the 11th round in an epic fight against the undefeated Anthony Joshua in London.

The Klitschko-Joshua fight was recognized as The Ring’s Fight of the Year in 2017.

Although Klitschko has not yet announced a specific opponent for his comeback, it is expected that he will choose one of the heavyweights for this fight. Earlier, in December 2024, Turki Alalshih, head of Riyadh Season and owner of The Ring, asked Klitschko during the annual WBC convention in Hamburg if he was considering a return to the ring.

Klitschko did not comment on his plans, but he actively supports Ukraine in its war with Russia. Turki Alalshih said in an interview that he dreams of seeing Klitschko return to the ring and try to become the oldest boxer in history to win the heavyweight title. He also emphasized that Klitschko would not fight Oleksandr Usyk if he defeated Tyson Fury, as both are heroes of Ukraine.

Currently, the record belongs to George Foreman, who at the age of 45 became the oldest world champion by defeating Michael Moore in 1994.

Wladimir Klitschko (64-5, 53 KOs), a two-time world champion, held the IBF title for over 9 years and won the title according to The Ring in 2009. His last defeat was in 2015 against Tyson Fury. After that, Klitschko tried to return to the ring, but his planned rematch with Fury was canceled due to the British fighter’s temporary retirement.

Klitschko won his first victory at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, and began his professional career in 1996.
