A Ukrainian refugee who fled the war seeking safety in the United States was shot dead in her home in North Carolina. The incident is being investigated as a double homicide, according to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.

On February 14, 2026, at approximately 7:45 a.m., Moore County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting at a residence on Daphne Lane in Vass, North Carolina. Upon arrival, deputies located two adults, ages 28 and 21, deceased inside the residence.

According to her brother, Mykhailo Tovmash, the victim, Kate, was shot in her bed by her ex-boyfriend, who had driven seven hours from Ohio. He allegedly broke into the apartment around 7 a.m., forced one of the younger siblings to wake her, and then shot her. He also shot her boyfriend, who was sleeping next to her.

Detectives have identified 25-year-old Caleb Hayden Fosnaugh of Ohio as a suspect in the case. Warrants have been obtained for his arrest for Breaking and Entering and two counts of Murder. Investigators do not believe Fosnaugh remained in Moore County following the shooting.

Fosnaugh is believed to be operating a white 2018 Ford Mustang with a black front driver-side fender and possibly displaying an Ohio license plate. He should be considered armed and dangerous. Authorities urge anyone who sees him or the vehicle to immediately call 911.

The identities of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Investigators believe this to be an isolated incident involving known parties. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
