On the night of March 26, units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck the Kirishi oil refinery in Russia’s Leningrad region. A fire broke out at the facility.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the fire occurred at primary oil processing units and in two storage tanks. The results of the strike and the extent of the damage are being clarified.
The Kirishi refinery is among the three largest oil refineries in Russia. Its capacity is about 20–21 million tons of oil per year, accounting for more than 6% of the country’s total refining output.
The plant produces a wide range of petroleum products, including fuel used to support the needs of the Russian armed forces.
The General Staff stated that the Ukrainian Defense Forces will continue systematic efforts to reduce Russia’s military and economic potential and its ability to supply occupying forces. Strikes will continue until Russia fully ceases its armed aggression against Ukraine.
