US President Donald Trump said ahead of talks at Mar-a-Lago that both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his view, are committed to peace.
Trump said the main goal of the negotiations is to reach a deal, stressing that the war has cost many lives. He described the conflict in Ukraine as the most difficult war he has dealt with and said the talks are now at a final stage.
The US president also said he had spoken with Putin by phone the day before and suggested that the negotiating process may now be less complicated than before. He added that he has not set any deadlines for reaching an agreement.
Zelenskyy, for his part, thanked Trump for the meeting and said the negotiating teams had done extensive work. He noted that around 90% of the plan has already been agreed, with further discussions to focus on strategy, security guarantees and a step-by-step approach to ending the war.
