The new US President Donald Trump wants to drastically reduce the number of illegal immigrants in the United States. The first deportations have already taken place.
This was reported by Trump’s press secretary, Caroline Levitt, Deutsche Welle reports.
Just a few days after Donald Trump took office, the US authorities arrested more than 530 illegal immigrants and “deported hundreds.” This was reported by Trump’s press secretary, Caroline Levitt, on the online service X.
“538 criminal illegal immigrants have been arrested and hundreds have been deported by military aircraft. This is the largest mass deportation in history,” the report says.
According to Deutsche Welle, the numbers are not necessarily significantly higher than in the recent past. ICE reported more than 170,000 arrests in 2023 – an average of about 467 per day.
Trump’s goal, which he announced during the campaign, is to drastically reduce the number of the estimated eleven million undocumented immigrants in the United States. At his inauguration on Monday, Trump announced his intention to deport “millions and millions” of undocumented immigrants. He also declared a state of emergency on the border with Mexico and announced the deployment of more U.S. soldiers there. This week, the Republican-led U.S. Congress also approved a bill to extend pretrial detention for suspected foreigners without valid residency documents.
Deportation flights have begun.
