        Supreme Court chief justice dies suddenly in Russia

        Russian Supreme Court Chief Justice Irina Podnosova has died in Moscow, according to Russian state media reports.

        Podnosova had headed the Supreme Court since April 17, 2024. She was the only candidate for the position of chief justice, which became vacant after the death of Vyacheslav Lebedev, who had held the position since 1991.

        Podnosova graduated from the law faculty of Leningrad State University in 1975, at the same time as Vladimir Putin. While working in the judicial system, Podnosova headed the Leningrad Regional Court and the Second Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction.
