Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Russia is currently not interested in real peace talks, and a truce in Ukraine during Christmas seems unlikely. According to him, additional pressure on Moscow and the preservation of Western unity are needed to move the situation forward.
This was reported by the Polish publication Onet.
“It seems that the Russians are not interested in serious peace talks or a ceasefire at this time. We need even more pressure and a demonstration that we will not allow ourselves to be divided as the West. Then these talks can take on a concrete character. But before Christmas, I think this is very unlikely,“ Tusk said.
According to the Polish prime minister, the talks in Berlin clearly demonstrated for the first time ”that the Americans and Europeans are on the same side.”
“For the first time, I heard from American negotiators, and Mr. Steve Witkoff was unequivocal that America would participate in security guarantees for Ukraine in such a way that the Russians would have no doubt that (in the event of a violation of the ceasefire terms – ed.) the US response would be military,” Tusk said.
The head of the Polish government confirmed that the territorial issue remains complex and requires serious consideration on the part of Ukraine. According to Tusk, Warsaw will not put pressure on Kyiv — the final decision rests with the Ukrainians.
Recall that on the eve of the German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz proposed that Russia arrange a truce on Christmas and stressed that now everything depends on Moscow.
