Romanian President Nicușor Dan announced the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Constanța after a Russian drone crashed into a residential building in the city of Galați. Russian Consul Andrey Kosylin will be declared persona non grata.

During the night of May 29, a Russian drone crashed onto the roof of a ten-story residential building in Galați, southeastern Romania, during a Russian attack on Ukraine. The impact caused an explosion and a fire in an apartment on the 10th floor of the building, and two Romanian citizens were injured.
Following the incident, Romanian President Nicușor Dan convened a meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT). According to him, the drone was a Russian Geran-2 UAV that had launched from Russian territory and was part of a group of 43 drones, only one of which reached Romanian territory.
Nicușor Dan stated that Russia bears full responsibility for the incident. After the meeting, he announced that Russian Consul General in Constanța Andrey Kosylin would be declared persona non grata and that Russia’s consulate in Constanța would be closed.
The Romanian president also said he discussed the situation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. According to Dan, the Alliance confirmed its support for Romania and its readiness to defend the territory of NATO member states.
Nicușor Dan stated that Romania is signing contracts to procure air defense systems under the SAFE program and is also implementing joint programs with Ukraine, the United States, and the United Kingdom for the production and testing of drones and counter-drone systems.
