The Russian military shot dead five Ukrainian prisoners of war near Novodarivka in Zaporizhzhia. The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine has launched an investigation into this war crime.

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.

The incident occurred on November 24, 2024, near the village of Novodarivka in the Pohohiv district of Zaporizhzhia region, where active hostilities are ongoing. According to the investigation, the Russian military shot five of the six Ukrainian defenders who were captured.

“Law enforcement officers have identified the occupation army unit whose military are being checked for involvement in the crime. The investigation also received a video recording of the moment of the shooting,” the statement said.

The killing of prisoners of war is a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions and is classified as a grave international crime, the Prosecutor General’s Office reminded.

The Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, appealed to the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross to investigate the incident.

“The occupiers have once again violated the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War. The aggressor must be stopped immediately and brought to justice. The world should not stand aside!” emphasized Lubinets.
