        Kyiv Hit by New Russian Night Attack: High-Rise Buildings Damaged, Children Among the Wounded

        Russia launched another massive overnight attack on Kyiv on July 6. Air defense forces were operating in the capital, but debris and direct impacts caused destruction and fires in several districts of the city. As of 5:20 a.m., seven people were known to have been killed and 24 injured.

        The aftermath of the attack was reported by Kyiv City Military Administration chief Tymur Tkachenko, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko and Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.

        According to Tkachenko, the enemy attacked the capital with ballistic missiles. At around 1:44 a.m., he urged Kyiv residents to remain in shelters and not ignore the danger.

        The worst damage was reported in the Podilskyi and Darnytskyi districts. In Podilskyi district, a residential building was partially destroyed, cars caught fire, and people were trapped in one of the high-rise buildings. According to Klitschko, rescuers brought 15 people out of the building and evacuated three women and six children from the upper floors.

        The State Emergency Service said a residential high-rise building in Podilskyi district was hit, causing destruction from the 9th to the 5th floors. Seventeen people were brought outside, and another 28 were rescued from the upper floors using an aerial ladder. The rescue operation is ongoing.

        Fires and damage were also reported at several other locations in Podilskyi district: cars burned in the courtyard of a residential building, the roof and elevator shaft were damaged, and debris fell at the level of the 16th floor of a 25-story residential building.

        In Darnytskyi district, debris hit a 25-story building at the level of the 4th floor. According to Klitschko, people were trapped on the upper floors, and 22 residents were rescued from the building. Two people were found dead there.

        In addition, a fire broke out on the 23rd to 25th floors of a 30-story residential building in Darnytskyi district. Residents are being evacuated. Fires were also reported in an apartment building and in a nearby garage cooperative.

        In Holosiivskyi district, falling debris and fires were recorded. According to Klitschko, fires broke out on the territory of non-residential buildings, in a warehouse facility and in an open area. Later, Tkachenko reported a fire in a five-story building.

        In Obolonskyi district, according to the Kyiv mayor, a warehouse building caught fire, and an impact was recorded on the territory of non-residential buildings.

        The number of injured rose quickly throughout the night. Authorities first reported two wounded, then three, five and seven. As of 5:20 a.m., according to the Kyiv City Military Administration, 24 people were injured. Klitschko said 14 of them were hospitalized, including two children aged 7 and 8.

        Rescuers recovered two more bodies from under the rubble, bringing the death toll to seven.

        “Kyiv residents had not yet had time to recover from the recent large-scale shelling when the enemy again struck peaceful people”, the State Emergency Service said.

        The day before, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Ukrainian intelligence had information that Russia was preparing a new massive strike on Ukraine. He urged Ukrainians not to ignore air raid alerts and called on partners not to delay the delivery of missiles for Ukrainian air defense, particularly Patriot systems.

        “Patriot missiles are needed now not in warehouses, but in Patriot units in Ukraine”, Zelenskyy emphasized.
