Chief of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov believes that a ceasefire could be reached in the war between Ukraine and Russia in 2025. However, he is not sure that peacekeepers will be an effective guarantee of security.
He spoke about this in an interview with journalist Eynulla Fatullayev.
When asked whether it is possible to achieve a ceasefire this year, Budanov expressed his personal opinion: “I think so. This is a paradoxical situation: despite the fact that the starting positions of the parties are diametrically opposed, I believe that we will reach a ceasefire this year. How long and effective it will be is another question.”
Regarding security guarantees, in particular the deployment of peacekeepers, the head of the DIU questioned their effectiveness.
He called the issue of security guarantees “debatable” and added that joining NATO remains a complicated issue. At the same time, there are no other formats that could be called real guarantees.
“Perhaps it is something like the status of a major non-NATO ally of the United States, as a number of states have. But this is more about commitments to support the country, not full-fledged security guarantees,” the intelligence chief explained.
