Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has instructed lawmakers to draft a bill on the possibility of holding elections during martial law. A working meeting on the electoral process has already been held at the Presidential Administration, during which security aspects and possible innovations in voting were discussed.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing its own sources.
A working meeting on the possibility of holding elections during wartime has already taken place at Bankova Street. The relevant draft law, which is already being developed, should resolve security issues.
“Among the innovations is the possibility of multi-day voting, which must be completed within 60 days, as in the case of early presidential elections. The initiative is not related to any plans to hold elections, but was purely a reaction to Donald Trump’s statement that there had been no elections in Ukraine for a long time. In other words, you criticize us for not holding elections — please, we are ready,” the publication says.
In order to hold elections in Ukraine, at least a serious reduction in military activity is needed — the US must demand that Russia stop the daily shelling of Ukrainian cities.
At the same time, those involved in drafting the bill on elections during wartime have doubts about the need to see this work through to the end, as Putin has rejected the idea of a referendum, calling it a “pretext for a respite” that “will not pass.”
Recall that US President Donald Trump has spoken of the need for urgent elections in Ukraine, hinting at problems with democracy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded that he is ready to hold elections even in wartime.
