The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has confirmed that Chinese long jumper Jianan Wang tested positive for the banned substance terbutaline due to passive inhalation — not intentional use. Following its review, the AIU dropped all objections and withdrew its intention to appeal.
According to the AIU, Wang’s doping test from November 1, 2024 showed traces of terbutaline. The investigation established that the day before, Wang accompanied a family member to a hospital for a nebulization procedure. During such treatment, medicine is dispersed into the air as a fine mist, making accidental inhalation possible.
CHINADA provided hospital CCTV footage to the AIU, confirming that Wang was in close proximity to the family member during the procedure. An independent scientific expert also concluded that the concentration of terbutaline found in Wang’s sample was consistent with passive inhalation rather than deliberate use.
After reviewing all materials, the AIU stated that it had no reason to doubt CHINADA’s findings and formally withdrew its protective appeal.
Jianan Wang is one of China’s most accomplished long jump athletes. He is the 2022 world champion and a multiple medalist at major international competitions. The doping case temporarily cast uncertainty over his career, but after the review, he faced no sanctions.
