Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had sent a special letter to US President Donald Trump and the US Congress because of the need for urgent decisions to strengthen Ukraine’s protection against Russian ballistic missile attacks.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this in his evening address on May 27.
“It is rare for leaders of another country to address both the President and Congress of the United States simultaneously in a letter, but the situation now is such that we must act quickly and effectively,” the president said.
Zelenskyy stressed that despite the world’s strong focus on the war in the Middle East, Russia’s war against Ukraine must also be stopped.
“It is important that America hears Ukraine. We understand that much global attention is now focused on the war in Iran. But the war here in Europe must also be stopped,” the head of state said.
Zelenskyy also said that faster reinforcement of Ukraine’s defenses against ballistic missiles could help advance diplomatic efforts to end the war.
“As long as Russia relies on missiles, its interest in diplomacy is not genuine,” the president said.
He added that Ukraine is grateful to the United States for its support and hopes for further assistance in achieving a dignified peace and guaranteed security.
