Voting in the second round of the presidential election has started in Moldova

Voting in the second round of the presidential election has begun in Moldova. Polling stations opened at 07:00 and will be open until 21:00, Point reports.

According to the newspaper, a total of 2,219 polling stations are open, of which 1,988 are on the territory of Moldova. Another 231 polling stations are organised in 37 countries.

The incumbent President Maia Sandu and former Prosecutor General Alexandru Stoianoglo are running for the post of head of state. According to the results of the first round, Sandu received 42.49 per cent of votes, while Stoianoglo received 25.95 per cent.

The second round of elections will be considered valid if at least one-fifth of voters take part in the voting. The candidate who receives the majority of votes will win.

The first round of the Moldovan presidential election was held on 20 October. A total of 11 candidates took part in it, but none of them won the electoral support necessary to win the first round.

Along with the presidential election, Moldova held a referendum on changing the constitution to join the European Union. 50.35% of voters were in favour of European integration, while 49.65% were against. The incumbent president of the country, Maia Sandu, also called for voting in favour of joining the European Union.
