On Thursday, May 21, Ukraine will celebrate Vyshyvanka Day — a holiday that давно stopped being just “a day of beautiful embroidered shirts” and turned into something much bigger. For Ukrainians today, the vyshyvanka is no longer only about ornaments, threads, and traditions. It is about resilience, memory, and a very clear statement: “we exist.”

The holiday is traditionally celebrated on the third Thursday of May. And there is a certain logic to that: no pompous state holiday, no mandatory parades — just a day when people wear vyshyvankas to work, school, university, or even the supermarket. And suddenly the whole country seems a little brighter than usual.

Vyshyvanka Day first appeared in 2006 as a student initiative in Chernivtsi. And honestly, hardly anyone back then could have imagined that within a few years it would become one of the most recognizable Ukrainian symbols in the world.

Especially after 2022. Now vyshyvankas are worn not only at celebrations or photo shoots. Soldiers, diplomats, volunteers, Ukrainians abroad, and even people who a few years ago probably could not tell Borshchiv embroidery from Slobozhanshchyna embroidery now proudly wear them.

And this is where things become especially interesting. Because for years Russia tried to convince the world that Ukrainian culture was merely “something regional” or “part of the greater Russian culture.” Then something unexpected happened: Ukrainians started wearing their vyshyvankas so massively and stubbornly that it turned into a quiet but very visible form of resistance.

So on Thursday Ukraine will once again look as if someone accidentally — or perhaps not accidentally — switched on “national unity mode” in real life. And perhaps this is one of the few days of the year when the ornament on a shirt can say more about a person than any political slogan.
