By the end of November, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will present a reform concept that provides for the transition to a corps system of organization. This was reported by Ukrinform, citing sources in the Armed Forces.
“We will switch to a corps-brigade structure,” the Armed Forces said.
The new system is aimed at saving human and material resources. At the same time, the transition to a more complex corps-division structure is currently seen as too resource-intensive an option that Ukraine cannot afford in a time of war.
The brigade structure of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has a number of drawbacks, including frequent dispersion of forces: individual battalions of brigades are deployed in different areas, which complicates coordination.
Some Western experts, including Tom Cooper and Donald Gill, recommend switching to a divisional model. According to them, divisions, compared to brigades, provide greater maneuverability and more effective interaction, which is especially important in a war against such a large enemy as Russia.
Nevertheless, Ukraine is opting for the corps system as the most optimal option in the current situation. The reform is expected to improve the efficiency of troop management.
