Russian military correspondents report that pro-Turkish opposition and rebels have reached the outskirts of Palmyra, a city twice liberated by the Russian army. In 2016, Valery Gergiev and cellist Sergei Roldugin performed in the ruins there.

‘Palmyra is everything,’ war correspondents Yuri Kotenok and Boris Rozhin wrote in their Telegram channel. Syrian army forces have reportedly abandoned the city and surrendered it almost without a fight – social networks are publishing videos of militias moving around the outskirts of Palmyra, which have been on the offensive in Syria for more than a week.

Palmyra has already been captured by forces in opposition to Assad. Russian troops and the Syrian army liberated the city twice in 2016-2017. In May 2016, a Russian symphony orchestra performed on the ruins of the city.
