Prior to that, the Ukrainian advanced to the next round after neutral-status player Anna Kalinskaya withdrew from their match. The victory over Lys allowed Svitolina to surpass her previous best result in Berlin and reach the quarterfinals of the tournament for the first time in her career.

The first set lasted about half an hour. Svitolina broke her opponent’s serve twice to take a 5:1 lead and then closed out the set 6:3.

In the second set, with the score tied at 2:2, the Ukrainian won four consecutive games to seal the match. During the encounter, she served six aces and converted her first match point in the longest game of the match.

Svitolina’s next opponent will be determined in the match between world No. 2 Elena Rybakina and the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala.
