        Svichkar wins World Cup gold in fencing in Astana

        Ukrainian fencer Roman Svichkar won the gold medal at a World Cup stage in Astana. It is his first victory at this level.

        This was reported by Suspilne Sport. In the épée final, Svichkar defeated Kazakhstan’s Ruslan Kurbanov 15:12.

        A total of 264 athletes competed in the event, including eight Ukrainians. Svichkar delivered the best result among them, winning a World Cup stage for the first time in his career.

        On his way to the final, the Ukrainian also defeated 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Mohamed El-Sayed of Egypt with a score of 15:7.

        For the 32-year-old athlete, this is his first World Cup gold medal. Previously, he had only won bronze at the Bern stage in 2019.

        It is also Ukraine’s first medal of the current World Cup season and the first gold for the national team since February 2024.
