On December 16, during a conversation with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal said that Ukraine does not plan to continue transiting Russian gas after the expiration of the current contract, but is ready to discuss gas transit from other sources.
This was stated by Denys Shmyhal.
The current agreement on the transit of Russian gas expires on January 1, 2025 and will not be extended. Shmyhal emphasized that Ukraine is ready to consider the European Commission’s request for transit of non-Russian gas in accordance with the principles of EU energy security.
“If the European Commission officially addresses Ukraine regarding the transit of any gas other than Russian gas, we are ready to discuss it and implement the relevant agreements,” the Prime Minister said.
Shmyhal also emphasized that Russia uses energy exports to finance its war against Ukraine and destabilize European countries.
The parties also discussed expanding cooperation in the electricity sector. Over the past week, Slovakia has provided 30% of Ukraine’s electricity imports.
