The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) prevented a terrorist attack in Odesa, which was to be carried out by an agent recruited by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). This was reported by the SBU press service on 14 June.
According to the investigation, a 31-year-old resident of the Odesa region was recruited through pro-Russian Telegram channels, where he was offered ‘easy money.’ His first task was to set fire to a military vehicle. After completing this task, the agent received instructions to assassinate a Ukrainian officer.
The perpetrator was to take a homemade explosive device from a cache and place it at the military officer’s location. According to operational data, the explosive device with shrapnel elements was to be installed at a playground in a residential area of Odesa. The detonation was to be carried out remotely via a mobile phone.
The SBU recorded all stages of preparation and detained the perpetrator immediately after the explosives were planted. There were no casualties as a result of the incident.
The detainee has been notified of suspicion under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, in particular regarding an attempted terrorist attack and aiding the enemy. He has been remanded in custody without the right to bail.
The operation was carried out by SBU officers in the Odesa region under the procedural guidance of the regional prosecutor’s office.
