World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has ended her campaign at the 2026 French Open after suffering a quarterfinal defeat.
In the match for a place in the semifinals, Sabalenka lost to Diana Shnaider, who is ranked No. 23 in the world. The match lasted 2 hours and 15 minutes and ended 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 in favor of Shnaider.
Sabalenka won the opening set and led 5-3 in the second. However, she failed to win another game for the remainder of the match, losing nine consecutive games.
The last time Sabalenka lost a set 0-6 was in February 2024, when she was defeated by Donna Vekic at the Dubai tournament.
The victory is a historic one for Shnaider, who has reached a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time in her career.
Her next opponent will be Polish qualifier Maja Chwalińska, who defeated neutral player Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets.
Before Roland Garros 2026, Chwalińska had never advanced beyond the second round of a Grand Slam tournament. In the live WTA rankings, the Polish player has already climbed to No. 30 in the world.
In the other Roland Garros 2026 semifinal, Ukraine’s No. 2 Marta Kostyuk will face neutral player Mirra Andreeva. The match is scheduled for tomorrow on Court Philippe-Chatrier and will begin no earlier than 4:00 p.m. Kyiv time.
