Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to statements made by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who earlier rejected a proposal for negotiations and said he saw no point in a personal meeting.
In his evening address, Zelenskyy said that the Russian side had once again demonstrated its unwillingness to end the war.
“Unfortunately, the Russian side is choosing war again — everyone heard today’s response. A weak response. He simply does not want to end the war,” the president said.
According to Zelenskyy, the Kremlin’s response may have disappointed many international partners who are expecting genuine steps toward peace.
“I think many people around the world were disappointed by this response. He does not want to change anything and does not want to admit that this war is liked only by him and those who make money from him — they were all smiling broadly today,” Zelenskyy said.
The president also called for increased international pressure on Russia.
“That means Russia should have less money and face more pressure. I thank everyone who helps us! I thank everyone who stands with Ukraine and wants real peace,” he stressed.
Earlier, during a speech at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Vladimir Putin said he saw no point in holding a meeting with Zelenskyy and described his letter on ending the war as containing “elements of rudeness.”
