Over the course of a week, vascular neurosurgeons and interventional radiologists in Lviv performed a record number of thrombectomies—18 minimally invasive procedures on stroke patients. Usually, doctors perform about four such operations per week and more than 200 per year.
This was reported by the Lviv City Council.
According to doctors, one of the factors that led to the record number of operations on stroke patients may be the sharp drop in temperature. After all, it negatively affects the cardiovascular system and the number of patients is growing.
“At the same time, we also associate this with the positive factor that we have achieved the ideal patient route. The ambulance crew diagnoses the stroke on site and the patient is quickly transported to a place where they receive highly specialized treatment,” explained Oleg Kobyletsky, a neurosurgeon in the interventional radiology department at St. Panteleimon Hospital.
Doctors emphasize that stroke is one of the most critical problems in healthcare. Every year, about 130,000 patients are diagnosed with this disease in Ukraine. And according to WHO data, the mortality rate from stroke in our country exceeds the average for Europe.
