Former Russian national footballer Alexey Bugaev was killed in the fighting in Ukraine. This was announced by sports lawyer Anton Smirnov.

It is known that after his sports career, Bugaev was imprisoned on charges of drug possession. In 2019, he was sentenced to 9.5 years in prison. Subsequently, while serving his sentence, he joined the fighting as part of Russian military units.

Bugayev has played as a defender for the Moscow clubs Torpedo and Lokomotiv, as well as for Krasnodar. He played seven matches for the Russian national team, including two games at the 2004 European Championships. He retired from playing in 2010 at the age of 29.
