The European Union has approved a €90 billion financial aid package for Ukraine for 2026–2027.
This was announced by the President of the European Council, António Costa, on 19 December.
‘We have an agreement. We made a commitment, and we delivered,’ the statement said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked European Union leaders for their decision.
“I would like to thank all the leaders of the European Union for the European Council’s decision to provide €90 billion in financial support to Ukraine in 2026-2027. This is significant support that truly strengthens our resilience. It is important that Russian assets remain frozen and that Ukraine has received a financial security guarantee for the coming years,” Zelenskyy wrote.
According to European Truth, a joint borrowing option by the European Union has been approved. The decision required unanimous approval.
Friedrich Merz clarified that the funds will also go towards Kyiv’s military needs.
‘These funds are sufficient to cover Ukraine’s military and budgetary needs for the next two years. This is a decisive signal for ending the war, as Putin will only make concessions when he realises that his war will not bring him any benefits,’ the German chancellor said.
