The United Kingdom has announced new energy sanctions against Russia and signed an agreement to supply enriched uranium to Ukrainian nuclear power plants for the next two years. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the decision during the G7 summit in France, Politico reports.

The new British sanctions package is expected to target Russia’s “shadow fleet.” In particular, it includes an embargo on a number of vessels transporting sanctioned Russian liquefied natural gas.

The restrictions are also expected to target financial networks used to circumvent sanctions and support the Russian military.

Separately, Starmer announced an agreement to provide £210 million through UK Export Finance to support the British company Urenco, which will supply enriched uranium to Ukraine’s nuclear energy operator Energoatom.

The agreement was reached during a recent meeting between the British prime minister and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“Russia’s aggression threatens not only Ukraine, but the security of all Europe. That is why the UK is stepping up — choking off the revenues that fuel Putin’s war and helping Ukraine get through the winters ahead,” Starmer said.

Support for Ukraine has become one of the key topics of the G7 summit. The British prime minister is expected to urge partners to strengthen joint efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.
