Apple may mark the iPhone’s 20th anniversary with a major redesign of the smartphone, unofficially referred to as the iPhone 20. Possible upgrades include an all-glass design, under-display Face ID and front camera, solid-state buttons, and new battery technology.

MacRumors reported this after compiling existing leaks and information from industry insiders.

The anniversary model is not expected before September 2027. According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple is already well into the device’s development.

One of the biggest changes could be a display that curves away on all four sides. The design is intended to conceal the metal frame and make the phone look like a single uninterrupted slab of glass.

Apple is reportedly working with Samsung on a display with an equal degree of curvature around its entire perimeter.

The company is also continuing to test technology that would place Face ID hardware and the front-facing camera beneath the display. This could eliminate all visible cutouts from the front of the device.

However, it remains unclear whether the technology will be ready by autumn 2027.

Another possible change is the removal of mechanical buttons. The Side button, volume controls, Action Button, and Camera Control could be replaced with touch-sensitive elements that provide haptic feedback.

The anniversary models are also rumoured to feature the A21 processor, manufactured using a second-generation 2-nanometre process.

Apple may also use a battery with a silicon anode. The technology could potentially increase energy capacity without increasing the battery’s physical size.

In addition, the company is reportedly considering mobile high-bandwidth memory. Vertically stacked DRAM could improve on-device artificial intelligence performance.

The iPhone 20 is expected to be released in two sizes, with displays measuring approximately 6.3 and 6.9 inches.

MacRumors notes that around 14 months remain before the expected release, meaning Apple’s plans could still change. Some advanced technologies, particularly under-display Face ID, could be postponed to later models.
