Ukraine’s request for a large number of air defense systems to protect its nuclear and other critical infrastructure has been welcomed by NATO partners.
This was stated by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Rutte confirmed that this issue was a key one at the meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council held on Tuesday evening.
“We discussed how to provide Ukraine with additional air defense systems to protect its critical infrastructure,” he said.
The NATO Secretary General emphasized that this is a difficult task, as the air defense systems available in the Alliance already perform important functions.
“As you know, there is no surplus of air defense systems in the world,” said Mr. Rutte, ”However, a clear agreement was reached at the meeting: partners will support Ukraine and provide all available air defense systems.
The Secretary General did not specify how many new systems and what types of systems could be transferred, but emphasized that an agreement was reached on maximum efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense. “We are doing everything possible to transfer all available air defense systems to Ukraine,” he added.
